Not a lot of people realise this, but the Hewlett Packard, Dell and Sony of this world don’t actually make laptops. They instead have contracts with companies in the Far East that are known as Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs).These companies, whist not household names, are mammoth organisations which are set up to manufacture laptops to the specification of such Western companies, with of course Asian companies such as Samsung, Sony and Acer also having manufacturing contracts with them. The three largest ODMs are Quanta, Compal and Flextronics.
These ODMs have been suffering recently as labour costs in mainland China have soared.Whilst there is some talk of manufacturing plants being moved to India and Vietnam, in the short to medium term, the ODMs have had no choice but to put up their prices to the likes of Dell and Sony.
These effects will come through to the UK high street unfortunately.Laptop Power UK has experiences increases in the production cost of its laptop chargers and laptop adapters and it is only a matter of time before laptop screens and laptop panels also jump up in price. The same price increases will also filter through into the prices of brand new laptops in the shops. Our advice is to continue to look after your laptop, and if it breaks, get in contact with our sales team who can provide you with the replacement laptop part you need, on a 12 month warranty and at a competitive price.
