If you buy a Laptop Power Supply that is not the correct power rating what will happen to your laptop and your laptop charger? This all depends on whether it is too highly powered or too little. If you have a laptop charger that does not have sufficient power i.e you are using a 65W charger when you need a 90W charger the laptop may not turn on. If it does you may have issues with the battery not charging. If you can get the laptop to run using this rated laptop adapter you may find that the laptop power supply will not last very long. Some people receive a 20V charger instead of a 19V charger. Is this a problem? Well generally no because if the voltage is slightly higher, the ampage will be slightly lower. If you times the voltage by the ampage it will give you the Wattage. So 20V x 3.24A = 65W and 19V x 3.42A = 65W – the same power output.
The trouble comes when you overpower the laptop. Using a 120W charger on a machine designed to use 65W can cause problems on the charging socket and main motherboard.
