What is causing that strange burning smell when you have your Laptop Charger plugged into your laptop? Before you go any further it is advisable to remove the power supply from the laptop and turn it off at the wall. Something is definitely
amiss if there are strange smells coming from the laptop.
The charger itself may be causing the smells. Check that the cables appear intact and that the plastic protection around the wires is still intact with no bare wires showing through. Also have a look at the tip to see if anything looks damaged. One of the tell tale signs is the plastic on the tip of the charger appears to have
melted or disfigured. This can be caused by a short between the tip of the charger and the laptop DC socket.
A short could happen because the DC socket is coming loose from the motherboard and the electricity flowing from the charger into the laptop cannot pass as it should. The heat generated can melt the plastic and then give off that smell. In these instances the best solution is to take the laptop to a local Laptop Repair Store where it can be checked over to make sure it is safe to use and also what is causing the burning smell. The worst possible scenario is a fire starting so always put safety as a number one priority.

There are certain makes of laptops that will only use one particular size of Laptop Charger. This at least narrows down the possibility that there will be some error when you order your replacement and at least your new adapter will fit into the
charging socket in the laptop. It is very common however for there to be two different power ratings of a particular adapter. Typically the ratings will be 65W and 90W. So you may have an Acer Aspire Charger or an HP Compaq Charger that would need one of the two separate ratings.
It will tell you on your old adapter exactly the power it was producing. If you can’t quite read the tiny writing then look on the bottom of your laptop as it may also be printed here. This will prove to be very handy information and can make all the difference on how your laptop performs. You should find that with the correct
power adapter plugged into your laptop that the battery may perform better and your laptop will need less time hooked up to mains power supply each time. Visit Laptop Power UK for more information.

The majority of high street retailers do not have the shelf space or expertise to stock an individual Laptop Power Supply in all the different types and specifications out there so they will opt for a couple of Universal Adapters. You select
the power output and the tip that will correctly fit into your laptop. There are plenty of downsides to owning a universal power supply though. The power can be adjusted in some models which may sound good but what if you don’t select the correct power. You could damage the adapter of the laptop. You can also select the right tip
from maybe 5 or 6 options. Only one will fit your laptop, so the rest can be thrown away. But what if the correct tip falls off or you lose it somewhere.
This would never happen with a purpose made laptop charger from Laptop Power UK. The power and the tip are set so there is no chance of damaging your laptop and no chance of losing the vital parts that allow it to connect to your laptop. We consider a purpose
built adapter to be far superior as they are just that – purpose built. They will work in perfect harmony with your laptop and continue to power it for years to come.

Many people get a bit confused when they try to select the correct Replacement Laptop Charger should theirs become faulty. There are lots of different makes and types of laptop charger on the market but only the ones with the correct
specifications will work. These specifications are, specifically, the size of the barrel that will plug into your laptop and the power it produces.
The power of a laptop charger will be displayed on the charger box as this is a legal requirement. It should also tell you somewhere on the base of your laptop or in the handbook. You should be looking for the output volts and amps. Multiply these figures together and you will also know the wattage. One of the easiest ways to
find an adapter is to search for the model of the laptop eg HP Compaq CQ61 Charger. The website you visit should display the volts and amps for you to check.
So you have now found the charger with the correct power for your model of laptop, you need to make sure the charger tip will fit. If you check www.laptop-power.co.uk you will see all tip sizes are given next to the image of the replacement part. You can simply measure the diameter of your charger to confirm the compatibility.
Laptop Power UK has thousands of different models of laptop listed, each showing the correct adapter for you so why not take a look at our range.

If your laptop charger seems to have suddenly stopped working there are a few things you can do to check whether it is the charger at fault or something else. Firstly, is any power getting to your adapter? Check the fuse has not blown in the plug.
Try a different power cable if you have one handy. Some adapters have a small LED indicator light on them to show that power is reaching the unit. If this light is not coming on then the charger may have developed a fault.
With the adapter plugged into your laptop, see if there is any play in the socket. There will always be some, but if your socket seems very loose or if you hold in in one particular position then the socket itself may have broken and the charger is probably OK. If you have a voltmeter in your tool box, you can use this on
the adapter with the negative probe on the outside of the tip and the positive probe on the inside. If the indicator shows no current passing through then the adapter may be fault and will need to be replaced.
another way is to use your charger on a laptop that takes the same charger. Maybe a family member of neighbour has the same laptop as you. If the charger works on their laptop then your laptop may be faulty and will need to be looked at by a repair store. If you need any further help to determine if you have a charger or laptop
fault, Laptop Power UK can help.

The problem a lot of people come across is ordering a new Laptop Charger is ordering by the part number of their old adapter. This, in many cases can lead to an incorrect adapter being delivered. The reason for this is that the part number can
exist for a laptop charger for a completely different make of laptop. As the adapter you receive could possibly be for a different make of laptop, the tip size and power can be different.
As an example, ordering a new PA-1650-02 Charger will not necessarily mean you end up with the correct part as there are also adapters with this code for Toshiba, Advent, HP and more. Some suppliers may have a
listing that is specific to a particular make of laptop, some will not.
The better way to order a new laptop charger is by using the make and model number of the laptop instead of the part number of the adapter. This will narrow the search down to the specific type for your make of laptop and prevent the annoying circumstances when you need to return items for refunds.
So before you order a new charger using a part number, beware of the pitfalls of doing so and make further checks to ensure you order the right part first time every time.
