It is a common sight on commuter trains on both the tube and the rail network these days to see people working on their laptops as they travel to and from work. Time spent on the train is no longer wasted as you can get on with reports or checking emails as you travel. Laptops are ideally convenient for this, especially the smaller ones; being light and easy to carry.
However, trains do not always provide the most stable base for using a laptop. The train may rock suddenly over the points or as it goes round a curve, or may accelerate fast or stop more sharply than you expected, and as a result of this, you may find your laptop slipping off your lap, to land with a nasty sounding thud on the floor.
It is not pleasant to retrieve your fallen laptop and see the damage caused by a moment’s unexpected motion. Whether the damage is to the laptop screen or keyboard, you know it is going to cause inconvenience and possibly the need for a new laptop.
