What to do if your laptop charger starts beeping

January 23rd, 2012

The purpose of the Laptop Power UK blog isn’t to bombard people with technical information, but to give quick answers and insights into problems and issues people may be having with their laptops. We thought it helpful to share some information on beeping laptop chargers. It sounds like a strange thing to happen and the chances are it will never happen to most people. However if you are reading this post then the chances are your laptop charger has been beeping recently and also stopped working.

A beeping laptop adapter is a sign that an internal capacitor either has blown, or is about to blow. Unfortunately laptop power cables cannot be economically repaired so the bad news is that you will have to source a new one. The good news is twofold. Firstly, but noticing this beeping noise and then reading this blog you have now successfully identified the problem as one of needing to replace the power supply. Secondly you have arrived on the website of the largest distributor of original OEM laptop chargers in Europe – Laptop Power UK.

Let us help you get rid of that annoying beeping sound, and get you back ready for business in 2012. Don’t get fleeced by the huge prices in high street stores and waste time talking to shop assistants who know nothing about laptop power solutions. The chances are they will try to fob you off with an overpriced universal laptop charger. Also don’t waste time on £5 products on Ebay. You will end up buying three or four of these with each purchase getting more annoying than the last. We are here with the products and knowledge to make your problems go away – quickly and for the long term.

Why Delta Electronics and Liteon are the Sotheby and Christies of laptop chargers

January 22nd, 2012

Delta Electronics and Liteon are not household names, but maybe they should be! These two companies are the leading OEM producers of amongst other things laptop chargers and laptop adapters. Each and every day you use your laptop or netbook, the chances are you are using one of these two companies’ products to power your device.

As in most industries, there is no shortage of young and competitive pretenders. However the fact of the matter is that most of them are not very good and reliability of the equipment produced does not compare to that produced by Delta or Liteon. Why is this? Well firstly these two companies had the First Mover Advantage. They were awarded the large contracts back in the late 80’s and early 90’s to make laptop chargers for the biggest brands such as HP and IBM.

Over the years they have amassed a lot of expertise, quality control and patents. Many of the patents owned by these companies restricts the ability of competitors to make laptop chargers and laptop power supplies that meet the same performance cost effectively. If market reports are to be believed these companies are starting to struggle as laptop sales have fallen off globally. However don’t bet against Delta and Liteon being the companies who supply your laptop power cables in ten years’ time. Laptop Power UK is the leading distributor of Delta Electronics power supplies in Europe – so please get in touch.

Look for overall value when replacing your laptop chargers and adapters

January 12th, 2012

We get phone calls every day from customers who feel they have leapt out of the frying pan and into the fire when it comes to replacement their laptop power supply. Of course nobody budgets for a replacement laptop charger. After all it is not the kind of purchase we ever envisage ourselves having to make – that is until our previous one breaks or is lost. It won’t make you feel any better, however you are not alone. Thousands of replacement laptop adapters are sold each and every day up and down the UK. A common mistake customers make is to look to purchase the cheapest possible laptop power supply they can find.

In some ways this seems like a great idea at the time. However it is likely to cost you a lot more in terms of both time, money and annoyance. Purchasing original OEM laptop chargers is the only way to go. They last the longest. They have all the proper safety certification and they are the most energy efficient.

Purchasing cheap £10 Chinese laptop adapters is fraught with danger. If a problem is worth solving, it is worth solving properly and permanently. If you purchase a laptop power lead from Laptop Power UK it will be original. It will come with a one year warranty. Also the cost of our chargers is far less than those you will see on Ebay for one simple reason – you will only ever need to buy one of them because they will last for longer than your laptop. That’s what you get with OEM original quality.

The future of the laptop – Will the Tablet and Smartphone takeover?

January 4th, 2012

Given the recent popularity of the Ipad 1 and Ipad 2 many people have begun to question whether the growth of tablets spells the beginning of the end of the laptop. From talking to our customer base it would seem that people don’t view the tablet and the laptop and substitutes. For one tablets can’t be used for word processing therefore are of a lot less use to students and professionals. Secondly, ergonomically tablets aren’t that popular with everyone given the lack of a keyboard.

It does seem that the days of the netbook may be drawing in however with the growth of the tablet. Since netbooks also lack computing power, they represent a more direct substitute to the Ipad and the Samsung Galaxy. Again however it remains to be seen whether the absence of a physical keyboard is something people will readily accept over time.

Here at Laptop Power UK, our job is to prepare for every eventuality. As well as stocking a full and comprehensive range of laptop chargers and netbook power leads, we are now stocking original replacement tablet screens and digitizers / touch panels. Whether you have cracked your laptop screen or Ipad screen, have lost your netbook power cord or simply need a new laptop battery, Laptop Power UK will be able to source the correct replacement part for you.

Why The Burning Smell When I Am Charging My Laptop?

October 13th, 2011

What is causing that strange burning smell when you have your Laptop Charger plugged into your laptop? Before you go any further it is advisable to remove the power supply from the laptop and turn it off at the wall. Something is definitely amiss if there are strange smells coming from the laptop.

The charger itself may be causing the smells. Check that the cables appear intact and that the plastic protection around the wires is still intact with no bare wires showing through. Also have a look at the tip to see if anything looks damaged. One of the tell tale signs is the plastic on the tip of the charger appears to have melted or disfigured. This can be caused by a short between the tip of the charger and the laptop DC socket.

A short could happen because the DC socket is coming loose from the motherboard and the electricity flowing from the charger into the laptop cannot pass as it should. The heat generated can melt the plastic and then give off that smell. In these instances the best solution is to take the laptop to a local Laptop Repair Store where it can be checked over to make sure it is safe to use and also what is causing the burning smell. The worst possible scenario is a fire starting so always put safety as a number one priority.

Choose the Correct Power For The Best Performance

September 22nd, 2011

There are certain makes of laptops that will only use one particular size of Laptop Charger. This at least narrows down the possibility that there will be some error when you order your replacement and at least your new adapter will fit into the charging socket in the laptop. It is very common however for there to be two different power ratings of a particular adapter. Typically the ratings will be 65W and 90W. So you may have an Acer Aspire Charger or an HP Compaq Charger that would need one of the two separate ratings.

It will tell you on your old adapter exactly the power it was producing. If you can’t quite read the tiny writing then look on the bottom of your laptop as it may also be printed here. This will prove to be very handy information and can make all the difference on how your laptop performs. You should find that with the correct power adapter plugged into your laptop that the battery may perform better and your laptop will need less time hooked up to mains power supply each time. Visit Laptop Power UK for more information.

Forget Universal Chargers – Go for A Purpose Made Option

September 2nd, 2011

The majority of high street retailers do not have the shelf space or expertise to stock an individual Laptop Power Supply in all the different types and specifications out there so they will opt for a couple of Universal Adapters. You select the power output and the tip that will correctly fit into your laptop. There are plenty of downsides to owning a universal power supply though. The power can be adjusted in some models which may sound good but what if you don’t select the correct power. You could damage the adapter of the laptop. You can also select the right tip from maybe 5 or 6 options. Only one will fit your laptop, so the rest can be thrown away. But what if the correct tip falls off or you lose it somewhere.

This would never happen with a purpose made laptop charger from Laptop Power UK. The power and the tip are set so there is no chance of damaging your laptop and no chance of losing the vital parts that allow it to connect to your laptop. We consider a purpose built adapter to be far superior as they are just that – purpose built. They will work in perfect harmony with your laptop and continue to power it for years to come.

How To Select The Correct Laptop Charger

August 31st, 2011

Many people get a bit confused when they try to select the correct Replacement Laptop Charger should theirs become faulty. There are lots of different makes and types of laptop charger on the market but only the ones with the correct specifications will work. These specifications are, specifically, the size of the barrel that will plug into your laptop and the power it produces.

The power of a laptop charger will be displayed on the charger box as this is a legal requirement. It should also tell you somewhere on the base of your laptop or in the handbook. You should be looking for the output volts and amps. Multiply these figures together and you will also know the wattage. One of the easiest ways to find an adapter is to search for the model of the laptop eg HP Compaq CQ61 Charger. The website you visit should display the volts and amps for you to check.

So you have now found the charger with the correct power for your model of laptop, you need to make sure the charger tip will fit. If you check www.laptop-power.co.uk you will see all tip sizes are given next to the image of the replacement part. You can simply measure the diameter of your charger to confirm the compatibility. Laptop Power UK has thousands of different models of laptop listed, each showing the correct adapter for you so why not take a look at our range.
