Over the past few years Hewlett Packard have introduced technology into their charger cables and laptops resulting in only a genuine HP charger being able to be used. In an attempt to gain greater control of the aftermarket HP have introduced “Smart Tip” technology. However, is has made it more difficult for customers to get hold of the correct item they need.
Another trend in the HP cables market is a switch from 65W to 90W, especially for the larger notebooks. 90W charger cables are more expensive than their 65W counterparts to manufacture but at Laptop Power UK we charge the same for both versions. It is essential to use the correct PSU, as under amps can result in damage to the HP laptop charger.
When selecting a notebook adapter you need to ensure that the output voltage and amps are correct for your laptop and that the pin is the correct size to fit the DC jack on your laptop. With new HP Smart Tip technology there is another factor to check – that the charger has the Smart Tip otherwise the item will not work on your laptop, even if the watts and pin connector are correct. When choosing a new HP laptop AC adapter be sure to take these factors into account.
